Welcome to the IATEFL TDSIG and Braz-TESOL Brasilia Web Carnival 2022. To begin, we invite you to breathe in these two quotes:
A educação deve começar com a solução da contradição professor-aluno, através da conciliação dos pólos da contradição, pelo que ambos são, simultaneamente, professores e alunos.
Education must begin with the solution of the teacher-student contradiction, by reconciling the poles of the contradiction so that both are simultaneously teachers and students.
(Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, 1968)
The teacher is of course an artist, but being an artist does not mean that he or she can make the profile, can shape the students. What an educator does in teaching is to make it possible for the students to become themselves.
O professor é, naturalmente, um artista, mas ser um artista não significa que ele ou ela possa fazer o perfil e dar forma aos estudantes. O que faz o educador no ensino é capacitar os alunos para se tornarem eles mesmos.
(Freire in Horton & Freire, We Make the Road by Walking: Conversations on Education and Social Change, 1990)
The relationship between teacher, learner, and education itself is a foundational aspect throughout Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy. This emancipation from the typical ‘teacher-to-student’ to one of necessary and natural agency continues to be discussed, disagreed upon, and further interpreted even today. Through our celebration of Freire’s 100th birthday at the Web Carnival this February, IATEFL TDSIG and Braz-TESOL Brasilia are creating spaces for our communities to explore what critical pedagogy means for all of us in 2022 and how we are (or aren’t) applying it in our ELT industry/profession. We warmly welcome you to participate.

We understand everyone is coming from different circumstances. We are also approaching specific organisations for sponsorship as an active role in the event. We have chosen Gofundme as the platform to collect donations because of its low fees. If you’d like to make a donation of any amount, please do so below.
NOTE: After you donate using the link below, you’ll get a receipt saying that the charity is IATEFL, but that’s just because we had to set up the campaign as the organiser. We promise to allocate 34% to the chosen charity as we promised we would! Thank you so much for your support.
Suggest a relevant charity!
We’ll be donating a portion of our proceeds to a charity YOU suggest. If you have a great one in mind, we’d love to hear it. Tell us here! Last year, we were able to donate over 300GBP to a charity in Brazil.
What will we do with any donations for the live web conference?
All donations and sponsorship money we receive for the live event will be split into two bins:
SUGGEST A RELEVANT CHARITY IN NEED: If you have a suggestion for a highly relevant charity, please suggest it here. During the live event, we will vote on which to donate to.
